New 2020 Renault Captur crossover snapped testing again

The upcoming plug-in hybrid Renault Captur has been caught on camera again, this time during its on-road assessment

A new Renault Captur crossover is currently under development. When it reaches the UK market in early 2020, the updated model will feature plug-in hybrid power and styling cues borrowed from the next-generation Renault Clio. This latest batch of spy shots gives an indication of how the new model will look.

Renault’s new Captur will adopt an evolutionary design approach. Judging by these images, its profile and shape will remain largely intact and the brand’s signature grille will be transferred unchanged. However, Renault seems yet to finalise the car’s finer details, as this current mule sits roughly an inch lower than our previously-spied winter prototype.

In the cabin, the Captur’s updates will be a bit more evident. It’ll move to Renault’s latest dashboard layout, with a portrait-style touchscreen infotainment unit at its centre. There should be a more interior space, too, as Renault will make the Alliance B platform slightly longer and wider, unlocking more shoulder- and leg-room.

The next-generation Captur has two big tasks on its hands when it arrives early next decade. Firstly, it must continue its role as a sales success for Renault. Since being launched in 2013, the first-generation car has established itself as Renault’s third best seller globally, with 232,733 examples finding homes around the world last year.

Secondly, it’ll be the French brand’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle, using tech outlined by Renault’s former CEO, Carlos Ghosn, at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.

Renault is developing an all-new plug-in hybrid system making use of a Nissan-developed 1.6-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive system. The electric motor will occupy a dual role, both providing with petrol engine with additional torque and power, plus offering up to 30 miles of all-electric running.

Official performance specifications for the hybrid powertrain are yet to be revealed, but Renault has confirmed that the electric drive system will be supplied with power from a 9.8kWh battery.

The same tech will be used elsewhere in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, with all future electrified Renaults being badged as “e-Tech” models. After the new Captur takes its bow at the Frankfurt Motor Show next year, the next-generation Nissan Qashqai will follow, also fitted with the plug-in system.

However, despite sharing a platform with the Captur, Renault’s new PHEV technology won’t be present on the upcoming Clio. Instead, Renault plans to offer its biggest-selling model with a conventional hybrid system that doesn’t require plugging in. Further details will be released upon the Clio’s debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Elsewhere in the range, a new 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine will also appear in the next Captur. It’s already in the facelifted Kadjar, and it’s a unit Nissan has developed for the latest Mercedes A-Class. A diesel option will also continue.

We also expect the next Captur to take a big leap forward technology-wise. Driver assistance features will be enhanced greatly using technology sourced from Nissan. The ProPilot semi-autonomous aids developed by Renault’s Japanese partner will be fitted to the Captur as it becomes one of 15 new Renaults arriving with semi-autonomous technology by 2022.
